Many souvenir items were ruby stained. Ruby staining is a decoration applied
to clear pressed glass. The ruby
staining is a chemical solution that
includes sulfate of copper and sometimes gold. This chemical solution is
painted
onto the glass and the glass in then fired in a kiln at a
temperature of about 1000 degrees where it turns red and
adheres to the
glass. Different factories used slightly different chemical formulas
which accounts for the different
color variations. Sometime the chemical
solution was applied cold but this process was not as successful
because
the ruby staining scratched or wore off.
