Salt, Pepper, Sugar Shakers

Some people believe that the salt shaker was invented in 1858 by John Mason. He use his new invention, the mason jar and punched holes in the lid to shaker salt on his food. At that time, salt came in rock form, and it had to be chipped apart before it was put in an open salt cellar. Early salt shakers were actually salt mills. They contained a piece inside the shaker that broke the salt into pieces. Many years later the Morton Salt Company of Chicago added magnesium carbonate to salt  to make it flow and the salt shaker was truly born. Today the Antique Glass Salt & Sugar Shaker Club, encourages, promotes and supports the collection and study of late 19th and early 20th century glass shakers.
